You have your own unique style and personality, and chances are you want your style and personality to be reflected in your home. One of the easiest ways you can infuse your home with your uniqueness is through the items you furnish your home with.

Instead of going to a big box store, you may want to consider creating your own custom furniture to showcase your individual style and taste. If you're thinking that you don't know the first thing about creating furniture so you couldn't possibly create your own pieces, think again! All you need is a little creativity, the right tools and supplies, and a little bit of elbow grease to make a custom piece of furniture for your home. Here are three options to consider.

A Kitchen Cart

Could you use a little more counter space and storage space in your kitchen? If so, how about creating your very own, one-of-a-kind kitchen cart?

A dresser is an ideal piece of furniture to transform into a kitchen cart. The drawers are excellent for storage and the flat top is perfect to use as a countertop.

By attaching steel casters to the bottom of the dresser, you can instantly turn it into a moveable work surface that will add tons of storage and extra counter space to your kitchen. If you want to go all out, consider painting or staining the dresser and adding a new surface for the countertop, such as a slab of granite, concrete or butcher block. You'll be amazed by how functional and unique this piece of custom furniture will be.

A Headboard

A headboard is the perfect element to showcase your bed. Instead of choosing one that has been mass produced, put your creativity to work and design your own piece. Old shutters, wooden pallets or even a section or two of stockade or picket fencing can be transformed into a unique headboard.

Simply paint, stain or distress any of the three aforementioned elements to give them a look that reflects your style; or, you don't have to do anything to these elements at all – remember, it's about what suits your taste. To create a headboard, simply attach it to the wall where the head of your bed will be placed with screws and anchors and voila! – You have an uniquely beautiful headboard.

A Coffee Table

Everyone needs a coffee table to place their books, snacks, drinks and maybe even their feet. Instead of buying a pre-fabricated coffee table, make your own! Grab some wood pallets from a shipping business or any other nearby business (ask if they are looking to get rid of them and let them know you will happily take them off of their hands. You'll likely get them for free.)

To transform pallets into a coffee table, simple stack one on top of another and use screws or wood glue to secure them. Sand them, paint or stain them and add some steel casters to the bottom for mobility and you have a beautiful, unique, rustic coffee table.

With a little creativity, you can create some truly beautiful pieces of furniture – even if you don't have any experience making furniture at all!
